Castlecamp Tourism Barcamp Kaprun 2016 - Review

Last updated on January 13, 2017, 11:17 PM

The Castlecamp Barcamp on the topic of tourism 2016 in Kaprun is over and everyone has become a little smarter again :)

The big themes of Castlecamp were generally:

  • Influencer marketing
  • the importance of moving images (video) in tourism / gimbals / drone videos / Facebook LIVE
    • VINE and snack content – short, high-quality, yet appealing content for Facebook and co.
  • Content curation is becoming increasingly important
  • Gaming and gamification in tourism *Snapchat
  • Data protection and what data can I use from the guest and how to provide them with additional information

Video Content

In general, it was noticeable that everyone is already aware of how important video content is now, but many still don’t know how to deal with it / or how to produce it. There were some good approaches and experience reports, such as technical tips for Hollywood style below, or ski areas that, instead of using a weather camera, do a drone flight down the entire slope at 7:00 a.m. and try to stream it live for the users via Facebook LIVE.

##Snapchat

was a very big topic and a lot was explained and shown. However, the question also arises here as to how important Snapchat is in tourism, as it addresses a very young target group who are not necessarily the decision-makers in holiday planning :). The same problem as with Facebook a few years ago also arises with the personnel capacity in many tourism companies/organizations… no one can currently provide enough man-hours to run a Snapchat channel well.

Gamification

I found the gamification approaches from Polycular in their lecture at Castlecamp very interesting. There were some very cool examples here of how you can really spice up a tourist event, which Polycular always tries to combine with an artistic approach

Here are a few examples or food for thought of what is possible:

Weneverlookup.tumblr.com – explains why we need gamification :) the user just looks at the smartphone anymore

The Deepest Trashcan

Chris o shea – hands from above

Touched Echo – Markus Kison

Content curation is becoming more important

The curation of the content that floods the Internet is now becoming increasingly important and the winners are platforms that manage to pick out the relevant content for users and present it in an appealing way. According to the motto “less is more” we try to show the user only what they are really looking for/need. The too many options mean stress for the user/consumer, which is why reductions are being made everywhere. Amazon is also constantly working on reducing the selection sensibly.

Best practice examples:

Ozy.com – especially “Presidential Daily Brief” newsletter – what would be the important news in summary for a president :)

Hollywood flair with affordable means

Here are the impressions beautifully captured by Alexander Hohenthaner (from Restplatzbörse.at), and at the same time a promo video for the DJI Osmo* including gimbal. Alexander also held an interesting session to explain the advantages and disadvantages of this inexpensive variant for “camera movements” a la Hollywood, which are possible with so-called gimbals.

The short version:

  • For around €200 you can buy a gimbal tripod (explanation here) for your current smartphone, and nice “camera shots” are also possible here
  • The “Just switch it on and get started” all in one solution from DJI (the drone manufacturer) has the advantage that you can get started immediately with the push of a button and the complete camera system (camera + gimbal) is very compact and easy to transport. And offers 4k resolution. Facebook Live integration is not currently available (as of September 13th, 2016), BUT it should be coming soon. And DJI only offers the gimbal alone, where you can “clamp” your smartphone as a camera.
  • The advantage of the smartphone + gimbal solution is that you can also use Facebook Live for the floating tracking shot, or Periscope, etc. Live video streaming services.
  • As you can see in the video, the DJI Osmo camera (similar to the GoPros) is excellent in good lighting conditions, but indoors and in low light the weaknesses that you also have with smartphone videos become apparent.
  • In summary: for just under €470, the DJI Osmo system is a very cool solution for tourists who want to bring some Hollywood flair to their Facebook page or YouTube channel when shooting outdoors.

So again a very interesting and cool event. See you at Castlecamp Kaprun in 2017.
